DUSTY ZOMER KEEPS NO REPEAT WIN STREAK ALIVE IN BUMPER TO BUMPER IRA SPRINT COMPETITION WITH VICTORY AT WILMOT RACEWAY!
WIMMER WEEKEND SWEEP PREVENTED BY ZOMER VICTORY AT WILMOT IN BUMPER TO BUMPER IRA 50TH ANNIVERSARY ACTION!
May 7, 2016; Wilmot, WI – Wilmot Raceway hosted the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprints to open the historic raceway’s 2016 raceway season. Drivers and teams were greeted by a raceway that had undergone several improvements during the off-season. The result was a very racy track, which lead to some amazing side by side battles witnessed by the fans who now have an unobstructed view of the entire track.
The A-main event saw several cautions keep the field close during the first half of the contest, while the second half ran non-stop, and turned into a showdown between Sioux Falls, SD resident Dusty Zomer, and Indiana native Brandon Wimmer who was seeking to sweep the weekend’s IRA action as he had won the previous night at Manitowoc Speedway in his Hartnell Motorsports owned machine.
Zomer had won during his last appearance with the IRA Sprints in an event at the Dodge County Fairgrounds last fall. Tonight he had to fight a frantic battle with Wimmer through lapped traffic during the closing stages of the race.
On several occasions Wimmer had managed to show Zomer his front wing but Zomer would prove up to the challenge, and once clear of traffic he managed to build a small lead that he would hold to the checker.
Over the final laps Jordan Goldesberry and Blake Nimee scrapped for the final podium position. Both drivers had won Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint events last season at Wilmot Raceway and they were seeking their first podium of the young 2016 season.
In the end, Goldesberry found the speed to earn the position, joining Zomer and Wimmer on the front stretch for post-race ceremonies as a result of his third place finish.
The A-main contest started out with Nimee starting from the pole of the contest while 2013 Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint series Rookie of the Year Robbie Pribnow started to his outside. Pribnow blasted into the opening lead leaving Nimee to battle with Mike Reinke, and Zomer for the second spot.
On lap three an incident which disabled Russel Borland’s machine resulted in his car coming to a stop in turn one drawing the first caution.
On the restart Zomer worked the bottom line to make his way past both Reinke and Nimee. He then set out to close the gap on Pribnow.
On lap seven the second caution of the contest flew when Ben Schmidt looped his ride in turn three.
On the restart Zomer quickly disposed of Pribnow to take the lead but only a single lap went in the books before the race was halted again as Kody Kinser spun in turn two. It would be the final slowdown of the contest.
As soon as racing action resumed Zomer quickly took off from the field. Pribnow gave chase, rim-riding the track in the second spot while third was contested between Wimmer, and Nimee with the pair exchanging the spot several times before Wimmer secured the position.
The race past the halfway point with Zomer extending his lead on Pribnow who was holding his own in second successfully fending off the challenges of Zomer.
A few laps later Pribnow went wide in turn two, nearly tagging the wall. As a result, both Wimmer and Nimee were able to slip past for second and third before Pribnow regained his composure to retain the fourth spot.
Goldesberry meanwhile was making progress forward. After starting in the twelfth spot he cracked the top five with ten laps to go.
Out front the leaders were working heavy traffic which allowed Wimmer to rapidly close on Zomer, and as they sought to work past back markers Wimmer actually managed to nose ahead briefly but as soon as Zomer saw Wimmer’s front wing he was able to up the pace.
Over the final laps, Zomer maintained a four-car length gap which he held to the finish to score the victory. Wimmer had to settle for second.
Over the final circuits, Goldesberry managed to work past Nimee to take the final podium position.
Nimee earned his first top-five effort of the season achieving a fourth place finish. Seven-time Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint champion Bill Balog completed the top five.
Pribnow crossed the line in sixth followed by 2015 series champion Bill Rose who claimed seventh. Mike Reinke, Jeremy Schultz, and Joey Moughan who was making his first series start in 2016 comprised the top ten.
In earlier action Kody Kinser laid claim to top honors in the B-main, outpacing Goldesberry, Scott Biertzer, Scotty Thiel as the top four finishers advanced to the main event.
Heat race wins went to Schmidt, Wimmer, Dave Uttech and Raymond Hensley.
35 drivers checked in to qualify this evening with Balog turning in the fasted lap around the third-mile oval with a lap of 13.764 seconds, Wimmer was second fastest with a 13.898 second trip around the track with Zomer third fastest at 13.901.
Then series now heads back to Beaver Dam Raceway for a show next Saturday night May 14th. Bill Balog won the last IRA contest held at the track at an event back on April 23rd.
The Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprints will be back at Wilmot Raceway on May 21st in a co-sanctioned event with the All-Star circuit of Champions.
