Thiel Victorious over Tony Stewart at PDTR

Scotty Thiel fended off challenges from a trio of veteran drivers to pick up the win at Plymouth Dirt Track and reduce Jake Blackhurst’s points lead to just 15 points heading into the final night. In wingLESS competition Tim Cox used a late race mistake by Allen Hafford to take the lead and the win.

29 Bumper to Bumper Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car teams and 33 AutoMeter Wisconsin wingLESS series presented by the IRA teams braved the cold September conditions to compete on night one of the Wisconsin Sprint Car Championships at the Plymouth Dirt Track.
410 qualifying saw points leader Jake Blackhurst set quick time over Bill Balog. Scotty Thiel who comes into the weekend trailing Blackhurst by just 36 points timed in 3rd. Local favorite and Rookie of the Year contender Brandon McMullen was 4th quick, and Sammy Swindell aboard the Thone Motorsports 1 machine was 5th quick.
The wingLESS series fast time award went to Chris Dodd in the Hopf Farms backed 01. Ryan Zielski timed in 2nd followed by Nick Petska and Greg Olson. The series most recent winner, Allen Hafford was 5th quick.

The wingLESS series would hit the track first for there heat races, the first of which saw Tim Cox lead from the start, Jimmy Kouba stalked Cox around the 1/4th mile oval, and with just 2 laps to go would work past Cox and bring Chris Dodd with him relegating the Don's Auto 40 of Cox back to 3rd, but it would be all for naught as the red flag would fly for Randy Stanford who got upside down in turn 1. Cox was able to hold everyone off on the restart to take home the victory, followed by Chris Dodd and Jimmy Kouba. Allen Hafford came home in 4th and Johnny Fahl was 5th.
Heat race number 2 saw Chris Klemko lead the first 7 laps, but in turns 3 and 4 on the final lap Ryan Zielski who started 4th worked past Klemko and took the win. Klemko was relegated to 2nd ahead of Dennis Spitz and Jordan Mattson. Kevin Hinnich in a Dan Wade owned car finished in 5th.
Rod Colburn led much of the 3rd heat race but faces pressure from Craig Campton. Campton would work his way past Colburn but soon faced a challenge of his own as Matt Vandervere had worked into 2nd. As the checkered flag fell Vandervere was victorious over Campton. Nick Petska brought his 18 across the line in 3rd with Zack Raidart in 4th. Colburn who controlled much of the race was forced to settle for a 5th place finish.
The 4th and final heat race saw Doug Schenck lead every lap in route to the win. Jimmy Sivia would finish in 2nd followed by Nathan Crane. The battle for the 4th and final transfer spot was exciting as Jason Cox worked the high side and Natalie Klemko rolled the bottom perfect. As they crossed the line, Klemko edged out Cox for 4th.

Heat race 1 for the winged 410s saw a great battle between series veterans Scotty Neitzel and Mike Reinke. Neitzel would eventually get the best of the battle and pick up the victory. Reinke settled for 2nd followed by Jake Blackhurst. Scott Biertzer came home in 4th and Brandon McMullen in 5th.
Jeremy Schultz took the initial lead of heat race 2, but quickly faced challenge for Sammy Swindell. The former World of Outlaw Champion threw everything he had at “the King of the Sherm Nation”. Schultz seemed to be in control but Swindell, the Veteran eventually worked his way past Schultz and took the win. The 5J crossed in 2nd with Bill Balog in 3rd. Jordan Goldesberry came home in 4th followed by Scott Uttech.
Tony Stewart firmly held control of heat race 3, leading all 10 laps and getting the win. Ben Schmidt brought his 73 car home in 2nd followed by Scotty Thiel. Steve Meyer aboard the Meyer Electric 85m finished in 4th and Kris Spitz was 5th.

The wingLESS series B main was won by Rod Colburn over park City Illinois’s Jason Cox. Greg Olson would finish in 3rd ahead of Johnny Fahl and Derek Crane.

The 410 B main saw Todd King and Phillip Mock battle hard for the lead. When the checkered flag fell Todd King was victorious over Mock. Matt Vandervere brought the Portschy 55e car home in 3rd over Jereme Schroeder and Mike Decker.

With preliminary action complete it was now time for A mains, and the wingLESS would be first up. Allen Hafford followed the bottom line of the Plymouth Dirt Track to near perfection leading 24 of the 25 laps, but exiting turn 2 on the final lap Hafford’s 38 car drifted up the track giving Tim Cox just the room he needed to sneak under the 38 and take the win. Hafford was forced to settle for 2nd ahead of Nick Petska. Craig Campton in the 7s claimed 4th followed by the Hopf Farms backed 01 of Chris Dodd.

Scotty Thiel and Steve Meyer made up the front row of the Bumper to Bumper 410 A main, the pair dueled for the lead for the beginning 5 laps or so until while racing each other and trying to work around a lapped car Steve Meyer spun his 85m car around and brought out the yellow. Sammy Swindell in the Hopf Farms backed 1 car was now starting 2nd on Thiel’s bumper. This time “Slammin Sammy” and “The Big Wheel” battled hard for the lead until lap 17 when Swindell hit the wall and brought his mount to a stop. Thiel was able to gap the field this time on the restart, but Tony Stewart found some speed on the high side and was reeling Thiel in with just 2 laps to go when Dave Uttech got into the wall exiting turn 2, nearly collecting Thiel, and bringing out the caution. Fans would now see Thiel lead Tony Stewart and Jeremy Schultz back to the green flag. Thiel was able to hold off the Rush Truck Centers 14 and take home the win. Tony Stewart would settle for 2nd over Jeremy Schultz. Brandon McMullen brought the Bob Hood 10w home 4th ahead over Mike Reinke.
