TEXAS THIEL: “Big Wheel” to open 2024 campaign with Lone Star road trip

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (February 6, 2024) - Ready to hit the ground running, the “Big Wheel” Scotty Thiel and Team 73 are pleased to announce that they will be taking an early season vacation, not only escaping the upper Midwest’s late winter chill, but traveling to the Lone Star State to do so, prepped to launch the year with an ASCS Elite Outlaws (ASCSEO) doubleheader at Hunt County Raceway and Kennedale Speedway Park on Friday and Saturday, March 1-2. Certainly no stranger to Texas open wheel racing, Thiel last visited the Lone Star State in 2022, joining The Greatest Show On Dirt at the now closed Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
Not stopping there, Thiel, ace of the Gibbsville Cheese, Professional Plating Inc, Ludwig & Sons Trucking, Total Restoration Services, Scott Thiel Builders, No. 73 sprint car, will go on to spend the entire month of March deep within the Central Time Zone, joining the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series for multiple weekends of competition in Texas and Oklahoma.
“We’re excited to kick-off the new season in Texas. There’s not a lot going on close to home in March, so spending some time down South will give us the head start we need before Midwest action gets going,” Thiel described. “It’s going to be an adventure, for sure, but we’re ready for it.”
Thiel’s early season agenda may be packed to the brim, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg, as the Sheboygan, Wisconsin, native plans to take on a highly-competitive 75-race schedule in 2024, simultaneously contending for an IRA Outlaw Sprint Series championship. Thiel’s massive agenda will include some of the sport’s biggest programs such as World of Outlaws doubleheaders at Knoxville Raceway, Beaver Dam Raceway, and the Dirt Track at Route 66, as well as the coveted Knoxville Nationals and the season-ending World of Outlaws World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.
“We weren’t really sure of our plan of attack for this year, but we’re going to race as much as we can while contending for an IRA championship,” Thiel added. “With so much support right in our backyard, it’s important that we give them the local attention that they need. We wouldn’t be where we are today without all of our dedicated partners. It’s our goal to be a winning threat each and every night, as well as represent all of their entities at the highest level.”
The 2024 IRA Outlaw Sprint Series season will commence with a doubleheader at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, on Friday and Saturday, April 5-6. Thiel will roll into the season as a two-time IRA winner in 2023, scoring triumphs at Dodge County Fairgrounds and Cedar Lake Speedway, respectively.
“I’d like to also thank our friends at Starry Night RV Resort in Fort Worth, Texas, for hosting us during our Texas trip,” Thiel added. “Commuting back and forth between Wisconsin and Texas is obviously impossible, so we’re pumped to make Starry Night our trip headquarters.”
